About the Department

In the recent decades, psychology as a scientific discipline has been developing intensively. Research in the field of psychology explores very different aspects of human functioning and is trying to answer questions such as: How do we perceive objects in our environment? How do we perceive other people and ourselves? How do children acquire language? How do they learn to read and write? What are the brain structures underlying emotions? What motivates us to behave in a certain way? Why are some people more aggressive or more outgoing than others? How do men and women differ? To what extent is intelligence important for success in school? How are attitudes formed and how can they be changed? How does stress affect physical and mental health? What are the causes of various mental disorders?

Psychology tries to answer these and many other important questions about human beings, and can also contribute to a better adjustment, more efficient behaviour, easier problem solving, encouraging creativity and the realisation of human potential.

The work of psychologists consists of applying the insights of modern psychology in everyday life. In their work, psychologists use methods, tools, techniques and skills for identifying psychological states and human traits in order to better understand and explain mental processes and behaviour, and with the aim of supporting the processes of growth and development. The need for psychologists exists both in the public and private sectors in various fields of human activities, in particular, those relating to work organisation, employment and career guidance, communication and market, education, research, health, sports, social welfare, transport, justice, army and police.

The Department of Psychology offers a single major study programme designed for those who wish to explore contemporary psychology and its achievements, as well as for those whose professional work can benefit from better knowledge of human functioning. The study is organised according to the 3+2 model (3-year undergraduate study programme + 2-year graduate study programme).

Upon completion of the undergraduate programme, students acquire a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Upon completion of the graduate programme, students acquire a Master’s degree in Psychology or the degree of Master of Education in Psychology.

In order to work as psychologists, graduates must obtain a master’s degree in psychology. Competences acquired upon completion of undergraduate study:

  • basic knowledge of research methods in psychology, research designs, statistical data analysis and measurement techniques;
  • knowledge of general psychology, biological bases of psychological processes, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, personality psychology and social psychology;
  • general information on the applied areas of psychology.
