30th June 2007 - The excursion "Visit to old physics didactic instruments Rijeka, Sušak"
on
Tuesday 28th Aug, will be organized for the group of 48 participants.
Prenotations for the excursion will be possible at the registration, latest by Monday evening 27th Aug.
Welcome cocktail by the Mayor of Opatija is planned to take place in the conference site Hotel Ambasador on Monday, August 27.
Boat excursion on which the participants would be introduced to the City of Rijeka and the beauties of the Opatija Riviera from the sea is planned on Wenesday, August 29.
Visit to the birth place of geophysicist Andrija Mohorovičić, with lecture on Mohorovičić's work. He was born in Volosko near Opatija in 1857. and is mostly known as seismologist who discovered the Moho discontinuity in the Earth's crust. In 2007 we will celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth.
Activities of the conference participants with children from local elementary schools titled "Physics on the beach" are planned. It will consist of demonstrations of simple phyisical experiments on the nearby beach, with the topics suitable for the
environment: air, water, waves, wind, sunlight, sand....
The GIREP 2007 participants will be invited to visit to the First Croatian High School of Sušak with the Collection of old scientific and didactic instruments used in the Physics Cabinet of the School since its origin.
As a part of the excursion participants will be taken to the nearby Trsat,
site of the first settlement of Rijeka, inhabited since prehistoric times and one of the best known symbols of the city of Rijeka.
Conference dinner is planned to take place in Hotel Kvarner, one of the Opatija's symbols, the oldest hotel on the east side of the Adriatic coast, built in 1884. Its particularity is famous Crystal Hall which usually hosts the glorious events and has been named after unique ceiling lamp, made of 31710 pieces of Czech crystal and having mass of 1700 kg.
In free time, possible individual excursions by choice - National park Plitvice, National park Brijuni, Istra tour, Island Krk tour, Postojna Cave...
